37th Coordination Committee Meeting of the European Geoparks Network was held from the 16th to the 19th of March in the Spanish Basque Coast UNESCO Global Geopark. The meeting was attended by delegates of almost all European Geoparks and representative of the IUGS, IUCN and UNESCO.
This meeting has a special importance because this is the first meeting after big achievement – recognition of UNESCO and establishment of new UNESCO programme – “UNESCO Global Geoparks”, obtained on November 17, 2015 during the 38th session of UNESCO’s General Conference. Period of stability and adaptation has been started and delegates exchanged experiences and discussed joint activities to the new challenges and opportunities posed by this designation.
Last day of the meeting participants had chance to better know some of real gems of the UNESCO Basque Coast Geopark. Highlight of the field trip was visit to world famous geological outcrops of Zumaia. It is impressive 10 km of cliff exposures, continuity of sedimentation with stratigraphic records of the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary, Paleocene/Eocene boundary (Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum).
