GeoPark Papuk

Habitat of yew

E-mail Print PDF

The last known habitat of yew on Papuk is located in the forest area of Debeljak, near Zvečevo. Yew takes up a compact surface of 150 square meters. They mostly grow as shrubs, and only as two trees do they take up the category of higher trees. The oldest tree is around 100 years old.

Papuk was once rich with yew forest, which is proven to us by many toponims (Tisovac, Tisica, Tisov potok), and today these localities own no yew trees. Due to the exceptional quality of the yew trees, their hewing down during the 19th and early 20th century is the main reason of their disappearance in the Papuk forests. These are the reasons why this last known habitat of yew has been protected as a monument of nature in 2005, on the surface of 0,72 hectars.
